Starting today, Frankfurt is now home to the world’s longest regularly scheduled flight operated by a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner — a sleek, fuel-efficient widebody known more for mid-to-long-haul routes than ultra-long-haul adventures.
The Route: Frankfurt to Johannesburg — A Dreamliner First
South African Airways (SAA) has launched a direct service between Frankfurt and Johannesburg (JNB), covering a distance of 5,430 nautical miles (over 10,000 kilometers). What sets this flight apart? It’s now the longest scheduled route in the world to be operated by a Boeing 787-10 — the largest variant of the Dreamliner family.
The flight, SA261, departs Frankfurt daily at 21:15 and touches down in Johannesburg after roughly 11 hours in the skies. The return service, SA260, leaves O.R. Tambo International in the early afternoon and arrives in Frankfurt just before sunrise the next day.
Why This Is a Big Deal
While the Boeing 787-10 is known for its spacious cabins and fuel economy, it usually flies on routes under 7,000 miles due to its range limitations. So stretching the 787-10 on this transcontinental journey marks a bold operational move — especially at full capacity. The aircraft is equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines and configured with 318 seats across Business and Economy classes.
South African Airways CEO John Nkadimeng commented:
